High-(Energy)-Lights The Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Sky

چکیده

The high-lights of ground-based very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gammaray astronomy are reviewed. The summary covers both Galactic and extragalactic sources. Implications for our understanding of the non-thermal Universe are discussed. Identified VHE sources include various types of supernova remnants (shell-type, mixed morphology, composite) including pulsar wind nebulae, and X-ray binary systems. A diverse population of VHE-emitting Galactic sources include regions of active star formation (young stellar associations), and massive molecular clouds. Different types of active galactic nuclei have been found to emit VHE gamma-rays: besides predominantly Blazar-type objects, a radio-galaxy and a flat-spectrum radio-quasar have been discovered. Finally, many (presumably Galactic) sources have no convincing counterpart and remain at this point unidentified. A total of at least 70 sources are currently known. The next generation of ground based gamma-ray instruments aims to cover the entire accessible energy range from as low as ≈ 10 GeV up to 105 GeV and to improve the sensitivity by an order of magnitude in comparison with current instruments.

Very-High Energy Gamma-Ray Flux Limits for Nearby Active Galactic Nuclei

Combining the results of targeted observations, H.E.S.S. has accumulated a large amount of extra-galactic exposure at TeV energies. Due to its large field of view a considerable part of the sky (0.6 sr) has been observed with high sensitivity outside the targeted observation positions. Since this exposure region contains little inherent bias, it is well suited for studies of extra-galactic sour...

Revealing the Dark Tev Sky: the Atmospheric Cherenkov Imaging Technique for Very High Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy

One of the last frontiers of the gamma-ray sky is that characterized by the distribution of TeV photons. These photons can be detected relatively easily with ground-based detectors (constituting a TeV “window” in the atmosphere); thus the detection of TeV gamma-ray sources did not have to await the availability of space platforms. In practice although the technology was available at an early da...

Spatially Coincident Fermi-LAT γ Ray Sources to IceCube νμ Events

IceCube has detected several very high energy muon neutrino events, of a several hundred TeV to a few PeV, beginning inside the detector. These events are unlikely to have originated in the atmosphere, and are suspected to come from astrophysical sources, the likes of which can also be observed in gamma rays by the Fermi Space Telescope. In this paper, I explore the gamma-ray sky around 16 of t...

Search for Very High Energy Emission from Satellite-triggered GRBs with the Milagro Observatory

The Milagro gamma-ray observatory employs a water Cherenkov detector to observe extensive air showers produced by high energy particles interacting in the Earth’s atmosphere. Milagro has a wide field of view (2 sr) and high duty cycle ( 90%) making it an ideal all-sky monitor of the northern hemisphere in the 100 GeV to 100 TeV energy range. More than 45 satellite-triggered gamma-ray bursts (GR...

INTEGRAL high energy sky: The keV to MeV cosmic sources

After almost 5 years of operation, ESA’s International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) Space Observatory has unveiled a new soft Gamma ray sky and produced a remarkable harvest of results, ranging from identification of new high energy sources, to the discovery of dozens of variable sources to the mapping of the Aluminum emission from the Galaxy Plane to the presence of electrons a...
